1st Term Curriculum Summary

These are the skills and concepts your child will be learning through the 1st term of Kindergarten.

 

LANGUAGE ARTS (called EARLY LITERACY on the report card):

-       communicating thoughts and feelings
-       listening to and following directions (oral)
-       listening to stories read by teacher
-       exposure to letters and words in various forms (e.g. greeting song, class names, morning message, alphabet charts and games, songs, emergent readers)
-       emergent reading skills (e.g. difference between letters and words, understanding how print works, tracking left to right, top to bottom, noticing similarities in words, exposure to letter sounds through charts, morning messages, letter songs)

-       printing of own name, trying to write their own words and the copying of words

MATHEMATICS (called EARLY NUMERACY on the report card):

-       rote counting to 10
-       counting with one-to-one correspondence
-       understanding number concepts through tally of days and number of the day
-       recognizing numbers to 10
-       understanding of number permanence
-       understanding different ways of sorting
-       sorting a group of objects and explaining their sorting rule
-       noticing, creating, and naming patterns

SOCIAL STUDIES (called CITIZENSHIP AND IDENTITY on the report card):

-       understanding that they are all unique children of God
-       valuing the use of the 5 senses to experience God’s creation
-       valuing their unique interests, gifts, and talents and those of others
-       appreciating the heritage of their own families and those of others

CHRISTIAN STUDIES (part of this is also in ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS on the report card):

-       understanding the Bible is God’s Word to us
-       understanding how God made the universe
-       understanding the effect of sin on God’s perfect creation
-       developing an awareness of God’s plan of salvation for all people
-       learning to trust in God to lead, guide, protect, care for, and love them always
-       to know Jesus as their Saviour

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (called PHYSICAL SKILLS AND WELL-BEING on the report card):

-       developing a healthy attitude and routine of physical fitness
-       perform various movement activities safely and with increasing skill
-       following directions for movement activities and games
-       developing skill in throwing and catching a ball

HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS (called PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY on the report card):

-       identifying 24 body parts
-       knowing personal information (full name, age, siblings’ names, parents’ names, phone, address)
-       understanding healthy choices in food
-       understanding the importance of washing hands

OTHER KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS (some of this is under CREATIVE EXPRESSION on the report card):

Art
-       developing an awareness of appropriate use of colour and the effect of colour choice
-       increasing skill, care, and detail in creating pictures
-       developing increasing skill and accuracy in cutting and pasting
-       appreciating artwork in story illustrations or other media
Music
-    learning words to songs by rote and with accompanying actions
-    enjoying music as a special gift from God
-    using music to reinforce skills in other curricular areas

 

Technology

-       becoming comfortable in using technology as another learning tool

-       increasing skills in using technology to reinforce other curricular areas
