2nd Term Curriculum Summary

These are the skills and concepts your child will be learning through the 2nd term of Kindergarten.

LANGUAGE ARTS (called EARLY LITERACY on the report card):

- continuing development and practice of 1st term skills

- listening to and following game songs and actions

- listening to stories read by teacher and other students (Reading buddies and classmates)

- exposure to all uppercase and lowercase letters and their sounds

- segmenting (say each sound) and blending (put sounds together) words reading names of classmates

- reading of books at their own level to the class

- using context to determine words in various situations

- refining the printing of their name and trying to write more words on their own

- speaking a morning prayer or adding their own petitions in a group prayer

- improving their public speaking skills (clear, strong voice, confidence)

MATHEMATICS (called EARLY NUMERACY on the report card):

- continuing development and practice of 1st term skills

- counting forwards and backwards (numbers 1-10, starting at any number)

- subitizing sets up to 5 (recognizing quantities at a glance)

- exposure to numbers up to 100 and beyond

- understanding concepts of more, fewer, and as many as, in comparing sets

- developing descriptive vocabulary for 3D objects

 

SOCIAL STUDIES (called CITIZENSHIP AND IDENTITY on the report card):

- continuing to grow in their understanding that they are all unique children of God

- valuing what it means to belong in a family

- understanding the need for cooperation in groups and families

- evaluating information

- appreciating the heritage of their own families and those of others

 

CHRISTIAN STUDIES (part of this is also in ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS and CITIZENSHIP AND IDENTITY on the report card):

- continued growth in 1st term concepts and understanding

- seeing God’s working through people and history to unfold His plan of salvation

- understanding the meaning of Christmas and why Jesus came

- following the life of Jesus and seeing how He did all things for us and for our salvation

- to know Jesus as their Saviour and that He is always with them

- to know Jesus as their Saviour

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (called PHYSICAL SKILLS AND WELL-BEING on the report card):

- continuing development and practice of 1st term skills

- learning of movements for simple dance songs

- learning skills for gymnastics movements and balances

 

 

HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS (called PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY on the report card):

- learning how to wash hands thoroughly

- learning to work actively and independently

- continue to develop vocabulary for expressing feelings

- making friends, sharing, and caring for others

- developing responsibility

 

 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS (some of this is under CREATIVE EXPRESSION on the report card):

Art

- continued practice and development of 1st term skills

- noticing details and using that to create more detailed pictures

- using technology to create pictures

 

Music

- learning words to songs by rote and with accompanying actions

- enjoying music as a special gift from God

- using music to reinforce skills in other curricular areas

 

Technology

- becoming comfortable in using technology as another learning tool

- increasing skills in using technology to reinforce other curricular areas

- care and proper use of laptops
