3rd Term Curriculum Summary

These are the skills and concepts your child will be learning through the 3rd term of Kindergarten.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

-       continuing development and practice of 1st and 2nd term skills with the addition of the following:
-       learning new game songs to develop oral language, vocabulary, and expression
-       home reading program with checklist to develop and assess skill level
-       segmenting of sounds in words
-       hearing and feeling syllables in words
-       blending of sounds to hear and/or read words from a chart
-       understanding the concept of a sentence

-       direct instruction on printing all the letters of the alphabet and numbers 0-9

-       individually leading a prayer to begin our mornings

MATHEMATICS:

-       continuing development and practice of 1st and 2nd term skills with the addition of the following:
-       developing descriptive vocabulary for 3D objects
-       sorting 3D objects according to a single attribute
-       making 3D models and building using 3D objects
-       measurement skills of length (taller, shorter, longer), capacity (which holds more or less and how can we check?), and weight (which is heavier or lighter and how can we check?)

SOCIAL STUDIES:

-       continuing to grow in their understanding that they are all unique children of God
-       appreciating the language of their own families and those of others
-       understanding the need for cooperation in families and communities
-       learning about community jobs, evaluating information, and safety
-       becoming aware of time, place, and direction
-       discussing how to solve problems and testing solutions

CHRISTIAN STUDIES:

-       continued growth in 1st and 2nd term concepts and understanding
-       seeing God’s working through people and history to unfold His plan of salvation
-       understanding the meaning of Easter as the culmination of why Jesus came
-       following the history of the early church to see how the gospel spread throughout the world
-       to know Jesus as their Saviour and that He is always with them

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

-       continuing development and practice of 1st and 2nd term skills with the addition of the following:
-       gymnastics movements of rolls and various locomotor skills (e.g. bear walk, lame puppy walk, crab walk, etc.)
-       parachute games
-       various games to develop skill and understanding for team sports and relay events

HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS:

-  continuing development and practice of 1st and 2nd term skills with the addition of the following:
-       listening to stories of the reasons for healthy habits in eating, exercise, rest, dental care, and eye care
-       community safety

OTHER KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Art
-       continuing development and practice of 1st and 2nd term skills with the addition of the following:
-       making of craft cards for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
-       use of computer software to create various textures and colours
-       exploration of line design
Music
-       learning words to songs by rote and with accompanying actions
-       enjoying music as a special gift from God
-       using music to reinforce skills in other curricular areas

 

Technology

-       becoming comfortable in using technology (Smartboard, iPads, and Mac laptops) as another learning tool

-       increasing skills in using technology to reinforce other curricular areas
