Week 4

Joseph and His Brothers. Genesis 37 - 45

Big Ideas - Disobedience has consequences but our caring Creator hears our prayers, forgives, strengthens, and blesses us. He has a purpose for every one of us. His ultimate purpose is that through faith in Jesus our Saviour we have an eternal home prepared for us in heaven.

We leap from the Fall into Sin to an example of some of the many effects of sin - fighting within families, even to the point of murder. It began from the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned. Not only did they feel the  effects of sin in the world around them and in themselves, but they also saw the working out of it in the sinful nature of all mankind to follow. One of their own children, Cain, murdered his brother Abel. History is full of examples of the sinful actions of people and the Bible does not shy away from showing the dreadful effects. But God does not delight in showing us our sin. Instead, He delights in showing us our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

In the historical record of what happened between Joseph and his brothers we see an example of what brothers are capable of doing against their own family, of the powerful effect of forgiveness, and how God works through seemingly horrendous circumstances to bring good to many. The focus through this lesson then becomes the grace, mercy, and forgiveness of God, promised to Adam and Eve and all people through the ages. This forgiveness was achieved by God Himself coming in the flesh to take our sins upon Himself and to bear the punishment that we deserved. How great and awesome He is!
